About Grünbein: Brand History and Production

Ever since his youth, Grünbein founder Klaus Schwarz is mad about shoes. His first collection were extravagant Rockabilly models, which he produced 30 years ago in a small edition in the Palatinate. The fervour for shoes is probably in his genes: his ancestor Max Grünbein was a passionate shoemaker, who pursued his craft around 1900 in Silesia.

After various stations in the shoe industry, Schwarz founded the shoe company Linie Nero and the Grünbein brand in 2006 in Switzerland. When he converted the company into Nero Handels GmbH in 2009, the company headquarters moved to Berlin.

Premium Quality, Stylish, Comfortable

Typical for the Grünbein brand is the successful combination of high-quality European leather types, excellent comfort, best manufacturing quality and high fashion standards. Where other labels make compromises, Grünbein opens up another lane: the models come in two fitsModern Classic and Natural Fit, so that every customer can find their own perfectly fitting shoe – comfort and good looks form a perfect symbiosis.

Best Quality from the Start

Today, around 25 employees in Germany are responsible for the sale, organisation and sale of the shoe collections, all of the shoes are manufactured in selected factories in Portugal. Grünbein has worked with most of these small and medium-sized family businesses right from the start.

Based on the retro style of the 1960s and 1970s, the Grünbein collection offers a very special look with natural crepes soles, highly fashionable materials and a unique colour scheme – from timeless colours to extravagant effect leathers.

In the two Berlin flagship stores – centrally located in Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg – you can discover the entire Grünbein world in its colourful diversity. Or shop online here at Shoes Berlin to get all Grünbein models.

Our Quality Promise

People are at the centre of our collection. That’s why we use only high quality leathers that are compatible with the environment and people. All shoes are manufactured according to EU standard in workshops in Europe. The shoes are traditionally hand crafted to a large extent. These criteria guarantee durabilitygreat wearing comfort and sustainable production.

The Focus is on the People

Because you are important to us: Since the 2018 Spring Collection, all Grünbein inner linings are made exclusively from vegetable tanned leathers. In addition, most of our upper leathers are also vegetable tanned. Improper tanning with chromium sulphate creates harmful substances that cause allergies in many people. Also, improperly prepared chrome tanning agents can damage the environment to a great extent.

Grünbein offers one of the largest shoe collections with natural crepe soles. Today this unique natural material is only available from a handful of footwear producers. Our manufactures in Portugal have the necessary expertise and many years of experience in the complex processing of this special and expensive material. The effort is worth it: natural crepe offers a particularly high damping performance and a uniquely casual look. At Grünbein you can enjoy all these advantages at moderate prices.

The Right Fit is Important

Everyone is different. Therefore, we offer most Grünbein models beyond the usual shoe sizes: for Ladies up to size 46 and for Gents up to size 48. But it’s not just the length that counts: the unique Grünbein style is represented by our shoe styles OSLO (wide last, asymmetrical toe area), TOKIO (asymmetrical toe area, narrower last than OSLO) and BERLIN. You will find them in our shop under the label Natural Fit. The BERLIN style unites different casual forms, from pointed to round, available online under the label Modern ClassicThe choice of different fits makes it easy to find the right Grünbein shoe for every foot.
